I’m frustrated

autocad lt 2014 - unable to save

Just getting started with subscription upgrade to AutoCAD LT 2014 and I am unable to save my work due to tombstone response to QSAVE which reads: "Autodesk 360 - application not started.Folders and files can not be saved when Autodesk 360 is not running. Start Autodesk 360 and try again." I am signed in to Autodesk 360 (I can upload and download settings). Any simple solution?

  • Hello Henry,

Are you trying to save your files to the Autodesk 360 site using Sync? You should see a Sync icon on your desktop that was installed as part of AutoCAD 2014. Can you try double clicking that to see if Sync starts. It sounds like the sync service has not yet started on your system.

Last but not least be sure that you rebooted the system after installing AutoCAD 2014.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

    Hi Bud

    Thanks for the response.
If go back to my desktop and click on the Autodesk 360 icon on the desktop I can get the blue swirl 360 icon to appear on the task bar (Win XP pro) - it doesn't do so automatically. QSAVE now works when the 360 icon is in the task bar.
That's fine if I am on-line but if not it seems I can't save my work.
On the Autodesk preferences I have the 'start Autodesk 360 when I log on to windows' ticked - this function does not seem to be working, or not automatically when you log on.
Even more confusing - if you click on your AutoCAD ID bar, top right, you are offered 'sync my settings with the cloud' (ticked), 'Online options...'(similar to the old support search path settings). 'Autodesk 360..'(which takes you to the website, directly if you are already signed in), 'Sign Out', 'Account Details' and 'Uploading your settings...' None of these options produce the blue swirl 360 icon in the task bar - why?
Is there any way to save your data without being on-line?

  • Hi Henry,

Thanks for the updates. Once you are signed into Autodesk Sync (The blue icon on the desktop) and as long as you have it set to run as a service, then it should automatically be started each time you re start your computer. Give this a try...

Make sure you are logged into Autodesk Sync on your computer and you can save a file directly to the Autodesk 360 WEB Site.

    Now exit AutoCAD.

In the right lower corner you should see the Autodesk Sync icon. Right click and start Task Manager and verify that "AdSync.exe" is running. If it is, then the service is running.

    Re start your computer.

Once your computer starts back up, wait about 3 to 5 minutes to make sure all the services have started.

Right click again to bring up Task Manager again and see if "AdSync.exe" is running.

If it is, then sync is working as expected and the service has started automatically.

You also need to be signed into Sync for it to work. If you right click on the Sync icon in the lower right corner task tray, you should see a "preferences" option. Click on that and verify that it shows you are logged into Sync.

Give this a try and let us know how it goes.

    Thanks

  • I’m confused
    Hi Bud

I have followed your instructions as best I can.

I have manually started 360 from the shortcut on my desk top. I have opened ACAD and produced a new test drawing and saved it. I have logged into the 360 site and I have proved that I can save and re-open files. I can view a test file in the 'recent activity log', the cloud document view and in the Autodesk 360 folder in Windows Explorer.

I have closed down ACAD and restarted my computer. Went off for a cup of tea and on my return - no 360 icon on my task tray.

Just to add to my joy the old sync error game seems to have stared again - usually solved by right click and 'sync now' but even that seems to not work any more. I now have a blue swirl with a red triangle. Just underlines how vital it is to have some way of turning off ACAD's dependency on a live internet connection. Now that Autodesk have at last responded to the requests for an off-line help it seems a little odd that the while you can consult help off line you can't save your data off line.

I was going to delete AdSync.exe and reinstall it but it does not seem to be available as a standalone program. Looking at the files in the Autodesk Sync folder I see that most of the *.dll and *.exe files associated with this program are dated February 2013, i.e. well before my recent installation of ACAD LT 14. So the installation of ACAD LT 14 has simply updated the old logo and moved the program from the task tray to the desktop. Is that correct?

I am a bit stuck with what to do next - probably go and have supper and sleep on it. Any further thoughts will still be appreciated - in due course.

    Thanks
    Henry

  • Hi Henry,

Thanks for the update. It's not an icon that you will see, but the service. But if your seeing Sync errors, then it sounds like the service is already running.

The error shows up because you probably have an error that sync can not resolve. For example if you have removed a folder or it can not access a file it will show errors like that.

As far as the Sync Engine, The time stamp is based on when the files were created. Have you run any BETA versions of AutoCAD or AutoCAD based 2014 products? If not then you should be fine. I'll take a look on one of my systems a little later and see what the date is as well. Or more importantly what the version of the file is. Can you select one of the DLL or EXE files and then right click on that. Then let me know what the version is.

For the errors can you send me an eMAIL and I'll explain to you how to get the log file. then you can send that to me and we can check to see what the error is. You can eMAIL me direct at my first name "." last name "@" autodesk.com. So first.last@autodesk.com

Thanks again for the details and enjoy your dinner.

  • I am also getting this error, just saving local files. 360 is set to sync anyway, though, but I am targeting my local drive for the file. Other symptoms, I don't have a shortcut to Autodesk 360 on my Desktop and nothing in the notification area of the taskbar (or at least after exiting AutoCAD I do, but it disappears if I hover over it).

I did have a beta copy of R2014, but that was uninstalled and the registry and everything cleaned up completely. It also affects my demo PC, which only has released software.

It sort of works, but not well and the error message is annoying. I also experience significant delays before the Save dialog appears despite being on a 100mbit connection only I use.

    Help please.

  • Hi Will,

Thanks for posting your issue about Autodesk 360 and AutoCAD. What error message are you seeing? Can you post a screen shot of the error?

Also if AutoCAD is not able to resolve the save location, it's going to be slow and time out.

Do you see an Autodesk 360 icon in your system tray on the right side of the screen? Also if you go to uninstall do you see Autodesk 360? And what version is it?

If you were on the Autodesk BETA for AutoCAD please also check with the BETA Team to make sure that your system was cleaned up properly. You should not be deleting any registry keys at all, that can cause all kinds of problems for AutoCAD. You want to uninstall not just the BETA but any of the other products that installed with the BETA. Be sure to work with the BETA Team to sort out how to clean out your system just in case that is the issue.

Thanks again for posting your question and for getting us details to the product.

  • Hi Bud,

To answer your questions, as per the first post that started this thread (see HenryG's post from 9 days ago) the message is "Autodesk 360 - application not started. Folders and files can not be saved when Autodesk 360 is not running. Start Autodesk 360 and try again.".

How can I check what location AutoCAD is trying to resolve, it has done it's own thing so I would hope it is intelligent enough to sort itself out? It does connect with Autodesk 360 cloud folders eventually.

I have a system tray icon the tooltip for which is Autodesk Sync, and in the Windows 7 'Uninstall or change a Program' window this is reported as version 4.0.5.4. There is no entry named Autodesk 360 in this list of installed programs. During the install of AutoCAD R2014 I left all options and choices the default ones so I don't know how this wouldn't have been installed. I also have R2010 through to R2014, of Vanilla and Civil 3D.

When I run R2014 it does successfully report settings have been synced, I am logged on properly and it does (eventually) connect to the folders on the cloud.

Lastly, I have used the Registry clean-up tool, but this didn't clear everything up, there were still some registry entries left, and some files such as mnr and others so some manual cleanup, in my experience over the years with AutoCAD, has always been necessary.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers
    Will

  • Hi Will,

Thanks for the update. It sounds like the error is actually coming from AutoCAD, not sync and it's because it is unable to write to the location. In this case I wonder if Sync is still logging in? I have never seen this error in AutoCAD 2014 so it's hard to say. Can you reproduce this, or does it only happen once? Also if you can reproduce it, can you get me a screen shot so that I can see it as well. You can post the screen shot here.

    >>>How can I check what location AutoCAD is trying to resolve, it has done it's own thing so I would hope it is intelligent enough to sort itself out? It does connect with Autodesk 360 cloud folders eventually.<<<

The error message is telling you the location that AutoCAD is trying to save to.

I wonder if both you and Henry have an install issue. It sounds like your Autodesk 360 is not updated. The version for AutoCAD 2014 should be "4.0.27.1" And if it's not then somehow you had an install issue that failed to install the 2014 version of Autodesk Sync.

You should also be able to right click on the Autodesk Sync icon in the system tray and click on preferences to see the version there. And the icon should look like the one in my screen shot below. Can you post an image of what you have as well.

Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit version of AutoCAD 2014? Also do you have any other 2014 Autodesk products on this system and if so what versions? That may help sort out what caused the install issues.

Let me know and we can go from there.

Thanks for the details on what your seeing.

  • Hi Bud,

Yes, it's very repeatable, error message attached.

You will see that this does not tell me the location that AutoCAD is trying to save to.

The Autodesk sync system tray icon comes and goes, at the moment it is not present even though I am running R2014, and I am getting messages about it synchronising my settings. So I don't know if there is a right click menu, but clearly from a clean install, notwithstanding the fact that I have had the beta on, it is not the correct version that has installed.

This is the 64 bit version on Windows 7, and I have no other 2014 products. There is also no item relating to Autodesk 360 in my 'Add Remove Programs' window as I mentioned in my previous post.

    I hope this helps

    Cheers

One more quick question. Do you have a Sync Icon on the desktop? It should look like the attached image.

Let me get back to you on the 2013 not starting issue. I have an idea on that one as well. But want to see if I can verify it first.

Also can you tell me how you installed 2014? Is it from media, or download?

Let me know about the Sync icon as well.

Thanks again for all the details.

  • I'm having this exact problem with AutoCAD 2014 LT. I've shut off 360 [do not start with windows option] because of the annoying errors when AutoCAD isn't even running. Now, I've been working on a local file but can't save it. According to the AutoCAD toolbar I am logged in ... this is getting confusing - too may accounts and log-ins.
    1) Why is a local save dependant on 360 - that makes little sense.
    2) Why can't we start 360 [and shut off] automagically with an AutoDesk product?

I tried to log-in here be you don't use the global AutoDesk log in ... ???

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting what your seeing. Lets start backwards. You want to log out of Autodesk 360 so that your not logged in. Then see if you still get the error.

Can you tell us how your saving the files? And where they are located by default? For example are they saved on your local drive, or a network server? Or are they saved in the Autodesk 360 site and your trying to open them from there?

Also do you have AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT 2013 installed on this system as well? And if yes can you let us know if you can right click on the Autodesk Sync icon in the system tray? If not can you post a screen shot of what it looks like? It should be like the screen capture I posted above.

Thanks again for posting what your seeing and for getting us the details.

    • thanks for that Bud.

As an independent though, not using a machine that is dedicated to Autodesk products, I would have much preferred that you'd have left the "login at startup, log-out at shutdown" alone. The sync errors were still there from time to time but with what you've done now I've uninstalled 360 as it no longer meets what I require as an install. I decide what runs and when on my machine not Autodesk. It's fine, I was doing it manually before, I'll do it manually again. The only major loss is syncing my settings with the "cloud" - that I'll likely miss. I've just installed the latest MS Office and it wants me connected to the bloody "clouds" all the time as well ... that was harder to fix.

Thanks for your time, have a great day.
      Dave
    • Sorry ... "log-in at startup, log-out at shutdown" ... means log-in to 360 when I start AutoCAD and log-off and shutdown 360 when close AutoCAD.

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm a bit confused by your login and logout comment. Even the Autodesk Sync in AutoCAD 2013 was a service. With AutoCAD 2014 and Autodesk Sync in 2014 you have a more functionality and can use it with folders and just drop items on that location and it just gets synced.

I am currently trying to reproduce the save error you and Henry saw, but so far it is working fine for me. I had to see you uninstall Sync at this point and would actually suggest that you put it back and just not log into it from AutoCAD or Sync until your ready to use it.

I have been using Dropbox and Office 2013 for a while now and I love that I have access to specific files on any system that I can log into. It makes it very easy for me to find specific files and modify them, or just show them to someone. I think once you get used to how it works, you will like it.

I know I started using AutoCAD with version 2.6 and did NOT want to save any of my files to the servers when we started using them. I just didn't trust my files there. But after a while I wondered how I got along with out it. I believe that being able to save your files to the cloud locations (Just another form of server) that you will start to really like it.

Hope this helps and please feel free to ask more questions or observations if you want. It helps you and us sort out how things are working and maybe how we can improve them going forward too.

    Thanks

  • Hi Daniel and others on this thread. I was able to work with both the AutoCAD and Sync Team yesterday afternoon on this. And we now know what causes this error message to come up. It happens when the file can not be saved to both your local system and the Autodesk 360 site. Sync is not running and so you get the error message. The error message is a bit miss leading. What it's saying is that you can not save to the Autodeesk 360 site. If you look in your folder the local copy is saved just fine.

So for now you can click ok on the error message and your file is still saved locally. But until you restore the Sync Service the file is not being synced to the cloud.

We are looking at making this error message better going forward but you are still able to save.

Hope this helps and please let us know if you have any questions about this.

And thanks to everyone that has reported this, it helped us to sort out why you were getting this message. If sync is running, you will not see this error message.

    • Hi Dave,

Thanks for the update. I will pass this information on to the team for you. I would recommend that you put the 2014 Sync back on your system though and just disable it. That way when you do want to use it, it's ready.

  • Hi Bud

Been a busy week. Thanks for your advice, to make sure Adsync.exe was the correct version. I wonder why installing R2014 didn't update the old R2013 (?) version. Anyway, AutoCAD now works fine and the errors have gone (although I haven't tried things with no internet connection). Unfortunately, R2013 is still broken so I suspect a different problem.

    Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the update. Feel free to start a new thread for the AutoCAD 2013 issue and we can see if we can sort that out as well. As a side note, you could try repair or re install of AutoCAD 2013 to see if that resolves the issue.

Hey guys, if you only need to save locally, as is my case on our local server, there is an easy way to make this error message go away. I disabled Autodesk 360 because I find it annoying frankly.

In Autocad 2014, open any drawing. Click the big "A" in the top corner to open the file menu. Click "Options", then the very top right tab should be "Online" if not click the arrow button to scroll over to see more tabs. After you click "Online", uncheck the box next to "Enable automatic sync". Click apply, ok.

    Problem Solved.

  • Hi Scott,

Thanks for the update and sharing how you are able to get around the error message. Note that you will only see this message if you have enabled sync but are not logged in. The text could be better, but what it's saying is that you can only save to your local machine right now unless you sign into Autodesk 360.

Here is another solution that is a little more involved but will also stop the message. If you are not using Sync there are actually two places that you will want to disable it.

In the Online TAB under Options by unchecking the "Enable Automatic Sync as you posted above.

Also by going to the Sync Preferences and unchecking the "Start Autodesk 360 when I log on to Windows" That way when you re start your computer it will not start sync again. You can get there by right clicking on the Sync icon in the System Tray. Then selecting Preferences. See screen shots below.

Note that if you sign into Sync from inside of AutoCAD then it will turn sync back on. But if you have unchecked Automatic Sync it will not try to automatically sync your settings.

Hope this helps with a little more details and more options. And thanks again for posting your solution to help others.
